We Are More Than Logistics
Giving back to the community and incorporating socially responsible ways of operating has been a cornerstone of our business since Merchandise Warehouse’s inception. We proactively seek out charitable causes to get involved with and we look to partner with existing organizations already effecting positive change in the world. The philanthropic initiatives our business takes part in gives us added purpose and a shared motivation for success.
Why We Do What We Do
We don’t do it for tax breaks. It’s not part of some marketing scheme. It’s not to attract publicity or gain greater visibility in our market. The reason we give back is simple: because doing good feels good. And, there is so much good still to be done. Here are a few local charitable partners:
UNITE INDY is an Indianapolis-based, non-profit organization that helps those suffering from the effects of homelessness, mental illness, substance abuse, unemployment, and victims of violent crime. We share UNITE INDY’s belief in second chances. Merchandise Warehouse works with UNITE INDY to provide employment to ex-offenders upon their release from the prison system. We are committed to equipping them with real opportunities to change their lives and the lives of their families through rewarding work and personal development.
Rise Against Hunger’s meal packaging program is a volunteer-based initiative that coordinates the assembly-line packaging of highly nutritious dehydrated meals comprised of rice, soy, vegetables, and 23 essential vitamins and minerals. In January, Merchandise Warehouse purchased enough ingredients for 95,256 meal packs to be distributed around the world in support of Rise Against Hunger’s efforts to end hunger. Every year for the past seven years, we have sponsored 100,000-meal food packs for Rise Against Hunger.
Midwest Food Bank’s mission is to alleviate hunger and poverty by gathering and distributing food donations to not-for-profits and disaster sites without cost to the recipients. Every month, Merchandise Warehouse has smashed or damaged product cases and items in stock that are approaching the sell-by date. Instead of destroying these items, we donate approximately 10,000 pounds of food per month to Midwest Food Bank.
We are proud to support Riley Children’s Hospital through our annual holiday Monte Carlo fundraising event. Tickets are sold to Merchandise Warehouse employees for prizes and then we match the total dollar amount collected.
The mission of the Edna Martin Christian Center is to bridge cultural, racial, and economic differences in order to support and nurture the people in the community by providing holistic programs that empower, encourage, and engender a vision of hope. For the past few years, Merchandise Warehouse has worked with the center to help provide employment opportunities to “at risk” members of the community. This includes people who have been incarcerated, are having trouble finding employment, and have demonstrated a strong desire to succeed.
We’ve partnered with some outstanding non-profits over the years and this is only the beginning. We will continue to look for more ways to do good in our community. It’s our hope that other businesses join us in this endeavor so that we can make an even greater difference together.
